Using your pain to justify/excuse inflicting pain onto others is the typical oppressive tactic which assumes that oppressors’s pain de facto holds more value than the one they are inflicting to their victims, and aims to swift the line of debate so that oppressors are perceived as the ultimate victims in the situation. Hence all the sympathy, time, attention, focus, concern, support that should go to the real victims, are then given to those who oppressed them! The artist says the piece offers, “an alternative unexpected reality,” that allows you to, “view famous individuals in a different way.” WTF I wonder if the first lady was Nancy Regan what storyline they would have chosen?

Yeah my mistake. When I referred to ‘AFRICAN’, I was talking about black Africans actually and ‘Mediterranean’, to refer to non-black, non-African Mediterranean.
Sadly though, from my experience with many North-Africans in France, non-black Mediterranean Africans are just as anti-black but they do not exotify us as much, at least.

So what came first. The dehumanisation or the exotification? I think that the exotification came first and the dehumanisation was a way to legitimise it.
In order words, they exotify us, yet degrade and dehumanise us so that we can be more vulnerable to their hypersexualisation of our bodies. A way to keep the upper-hand despite their intense repressed desire for our exotified bodies. I think that the sexualisation of black women in Mediterranean psyche is very poorly understood and way to often conflate with a US-centric approach of racism.
The sexualisation of black women ( and not merely black people as a whole) precedes slavery and racism as an institution in the Mediterranean. It goes back before the homogenisation of European civilisation. This is why Mediterranean Europeans are more proned to such behaviour. I would even say that it goes as far back as the Roman Empire through its dealings with Africa. Well this is my opinion.

- Igbo women were the breadwinners. They dealt in the market and handled money, their husbands gained their wealth from working on the farms. If you’ve read Buchi Emecheta’s “Efuru” you would have seen a perfect example of this, and of how a good woman was one who had a great sense of business.
- If you’ve read “Efuru” you would also notice the ease with which an Igbo woman could marry and divorce.
- A good wife-to-be was expected to have had boyfriends, Igbo society generally did not try to control female sexuality.
- Igbo people did not frown upon sex work. “Free” women were accepted as being part and parcel of society and could carry out sexual liaisons as they saw fit.
- There were no restrictions on a woman’s movement. Igbo women could travel far and wide in the name of business, visiting friends or family, running away from home etc. They did not require a chaperone.
- Igbo society had spaces for trans women (and trans men too!).
- Women could marry women once upon a time in Igboland.
And I will tell the women to tell the men and kids and animals, “DON’T LET THEM GET OFF THE BOAT!”

My husband looks at me like this all the time. I act like it annoys me, but really… he’s the only man who has ever openly adored me and it still weirds me out. Its a shame that as women, particularly women of color, we have been acculturated to not be admired and adored… to think that men who do that for us, who look at us like this are at best, weird… and at worst, simps.
